Many members of Gen-Y seem to have forgotten how face to face encounters work. Phones are being used less for talking and more for texting, and communication is becoming less personal then it has ever been before. Social networking sites and dating sites that Gen-Y is growing up on is allowing people to do mass comunications with little more than the push of a button and a click of a mouse, but what is this doing to us?
Facebook allows me to invite almost everyone i know to an event with a push of a button, and some people i may not know. I don't have to call any of them, no personal invites, no calls. The power of the internet is streamlining all of Gen-Y's lives, making it easier to not have to communicate except on the most basic levels. I feel this is a double edge sword, on one hand, it is good that everyone is more connected then ever, i always know what my friends are doing, where they are and whats going on around home. On the other hand, everyone is less connected then ever, people no longer need any kind of social skills to meet people. I have heard of everything from something as simple as asking someone to be your friend with an impersonal e-mail, to asking someone to date or even marry with a simple status change.
It is good that Gen-Y is technologically advancing, but we should be sure not to become completely dependent on the internet. Already the internet is causing problems in this generation, health problems, financial problems and a flood of personal problems, including the wrong person seeing the wrong picture. I see it happen with my friends, Health issues because people don't go outside long enough to know the color of the sky, and finance issues when "friends, who you have never met face to face, become too trusted. Gen-Y has a lot going for it, but we need to be more careful with what we do with our new found technological power.
